Cat God follows Maya, the titular Cat God, who has been banished down to Earth and stripped of most of her divine powers after causing problems and misbehaving with her parents. She lives with Yuzu, a kind owner of an antique store. They frequently hang out with the town’s wealth fox god Gonta and most episodes revolve around interacting with other gods in some way. Examples being trying to stop the poverty god from visiting their town, diverting a typhoon god, and helping the god of cherry blossoms. Pretty much every episode has rather low stakes and you know by the end everything will work out. For the most part, all of the gods are either cute animals/small girls or more traditional pretty anime girls. Surprisingly, there’s little fanservice in the show. The most revolves around Yuzu as Gonta, one of the few male characters, tries to see more of her body on occasion. There’s also an odd dynamic where two other gods, Sasana and Meiko, fight over the affections of Maya. Sasana was promised to wed to Maya by their fathers after neither bothered to check each of their genders and Meiko wants her after Maya became one of her few friends. Their characters consist mostly of showing up, fighting each other, and causing some issue of some kind.
The show isn’t necessarily bad or good. It definitely falls in the solidly average range. Its fluffy, its cute and its brainless. Honestly given the current climate of things, it was nice to watch something that on the whole is very happy and silly. Its definitely trash though for all of those aforementioned reasons. You’re not watching this to see anything of good artistic merit, you’re watching this because you need some junk food anime. I will say, the one odd aspect of the show is the heavy placement of SEGA consoles. Maya is often playing a clearly branded Genesis and occasionally a Game Gear. The times they’re shown the SEGA branding is very visible. Weirdly enough, the games being played are shitty generic sprites the show just cobbled together instead of actual SEGA games. If you’re gonna shill why not go all the way?
